The art department staff all firmly believe in the fundamental importance of teaching and learning in and through art as a vehicle for creativity, personal expression and for the purpose of design in a visual context. Our aim is to foster an interest for art in pupils and to enable them to develop technical skills, knowledge, sensitivity and understanding in order to visually express themselves.
At the same time begin to appreciate the place of art within society and in various cultures in both a historical and contemporary context. The prehistoric origins of art share magical and functional purposes and whilst we are firmly committed to art for its own sake, we must endeavour to enable pupils to appreciate the applied aspects of art through design. We have endeavoured to formulate a broad and balanced art curriculum in the tradition of art teaching and the spirit of the 1988 Education Act. Above all we aim to share the joy of art with pupils and to help them to achieve their creative potential.
In Key Stage 3 pupils work on topics from the QCA scheme of work.
In Key Stage 4 two courses of art (double award) are offered at GCSE level. AQA Art & Design unendorsed and AQA Applied Art & Design. The Art & Design course focuses on self expression, skills and understanding of context. The double award Applied course is client centred and based upon skills, problem solving and understanding of context.
