Independent State Schools Partnership

The Vision

To establish a sustainable partnership between the Borough's State and Independent Secondary Schools to increase the opportunities for Gifted & Talented pupils to work together in order to enrich the pupils' mathematical learning.

The Plan

To offer to the Borough's G & T mathematicians in Years 9, 10 & 11 from each of the state secondary schools and the independent Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School opportunities to experience and enjoy mathematics beyond the classroom by fostering a supporting community to encourage these young people to take their mathematics studies further.

2009 Maths Team Challenge

Pleckgate High School, Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Tauheedul Islam Girls' High School, Beardwood, Blakewater College, Our Lady & St John, Witton and St. Bede's High School took part in our second 'Maths Team Challenge' hosted by QEGS.  Each school entered a team of 4 students who competed against each other in numerous mathematical activities.  After several challenging rounds QEGS were again crowned champions for the second time winning a fabulous trophy for their school with St. Bede's winning the runners-up trophy.

Several hundred pupils from QEGS, Pleckgate High School, Blakewater College, Darwen Vale High School, Witton Park High School, St Bede's, St Wilfrid's, Beardwood and Tauheedul Islam Girls' High School have taken part in an exciting start to this new project.

75 pupils have attended maths activity weekends at the Anderton Centre near Chorley where they participated in a variety of activities all aimed at encouraging them to work together to develop their understanding and enjoyment of mathematics.

Year 10 pupils from Pleckgate and St Bede's joined a video conference organised by Cambridge University for schools in London, Kent and Milton Keynes.  During this, they considered the question 'Why do unlikely things happen so often?' and took part in an interactive talk led by David Spiegelhalter who is the University of Cambridge Winton Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk.

Year 12 pupils from QEGS, Tauheedul Islam Girls School and St Wilfrids spent a whole day in a video conference on 'Proof' in which they shared their ideas and conclusions with students from Kent, Surrey and Cape Town in South Africa.

Plans for the future include talks by famous mathematicians, a puzzle day for Year 9 pupils, a maths competition for Year 10 and 11 pupils, a visit to Manchester to attend a Maths Inspiration lecture and University visits for all the borough's aspiring and talented young mathematicians.
