In Year 7 pupils study French for 2 lessons a week - the top set have 3 lessons per week. Pupils at KS3 follow the metro course and cover a large variety of topics including school, health, personal information, the environment and leisure activities. Resources are excellent and pupils have opportunities to use the laptops, read French magazines and participate in a range of activities on the interactive whiteboard. We also place great emphasis on French culture and the culture of French speaking countries, enabling pupils to fully understand the global importance of studying the French language. Assessments are on a regular basis covering all 4 skill areas. Years 7 & 8 also have an end of year exam in French. In Year 8 pupils have the opportunity to study Urdu instead of French and then follow a comprehensive Urdu course at KS3 covering the same topics as the French course.
Languages at Key Stage 4 are optional and pupils receive 5 hours of tuition over a 2 week timetable. We follow the AQA course with the coursework option in both French and Urdu. Pupils again cover a wide variety of topics, relevant to their own lifestyles, as well as revisiting topics covered at KS3 in more depth. Pupils are assessed throughout KS4 and produce videos and presentations as well as written assessment. Emphasis is placed on fluency in spoken French. Pupils are entered for the GCSE exam at either higher or foundation tier and pupils together with their teachers decide on the appropriate tier to obtain the best GCSE grade.
