Years 7 - 9 study 4 projects each year, covering the QCA schemes of work. These projects study such areas as Music and Media, the development of Popular Song from 1960 onwards, Music for Adverts and Music Fusion (how music from different cultures have fused together to produce a new musical approach).
Much use is made of ICT, with pupils composing, performing and listening to music using this medium. Pupils are encouraged to compose music in a variety of styles and structures, and then to perform and record these compositions.
Assessment is carried out with the projects and by more assessment at the conclusion of each project.
Music GCSE is offered through the OCR board. This consists of Composing and Performing coursework which carries 60% of the mark. A further 15% is a further Composing and Performing assessment, while the final 15% is a listening examination. Pupils have an opportunity to study and compose in their preferred musical style, eg Bhangra or Dance and to follow that style through to the end of their GCSE course. Music ICT options are available within this course.
