Pleckgate has a student council that represents all the pupils' views. The council succeeds as the school has a vision of students as active partners in their own education rather than just as recipients of it.
Election Day is announced and given publicity throughout the school. Each form group receive ballot papers for every student and a confidential ballot takes place on Election Day. Each tutor group appoints two representatives to represent their year group council. One of the duties of the year group councils is to elect three representatives to the School Council. Meetings take place at regular interval dates throughout the school year. The Year 11 students act as chairman and secretary. One senior member of staff attends on a regular basis and other members of staff are invited when needed. All minutes of meetings are attached to staff bulletins and are available to staff and students on both pupil and staff share through our Virtual Learning Environment.
The council has been successful in gaining a £2000 BT award to improve playground facilities, providing a quiet area for pupils, sheltered seating areas on Year 7 and Year 11 areas. In addition their role has included helping to establish healthy eating, menu plans at lunchtimes, interviewing and assisting to appoint prospective candidates for numerous teaching posts within school.
